Broken Hearts

How do you blog about a day like today ? I mean even the President was emotional. Who wouldn't be? I don't mean to sound callous about other shootings in the US or other countries, but these are elementary school kids. How did something like this happen? Why would anyone do something like this ? I cannot even imagine the state of mind of the parents whose kids were shot. What are parents to do? Fairfield County Connecticut is supposed to be one of the safest places in the tri-state area  So if a place and a school like this is not safe for our kids and grand kids then where are we suppose to raise our kids? I am sure this is a question a lot of young parents must be asking themselves. I remember in 1979 when our oldest was about to get into Kindergarten people suggested that we get a house in the Hudson Valley because it was drug free and the schools are good.  It turned out to be true. We were lucky I guess. We had the peace of mind until 1999 when we heard about Columbine shooting. That shook us all. We still remember praying for the victims parents and  hoping that it would be an isolated case. Today I am thinking are we going to get a break from tragedies this year?

For people who live in the Hudson Valley, Danbury, Connecticut is no less than our hometown. We go there to shop to save sales tax and a lot of us sent our kids UConn. Connecticut is a state where people understand the meaning of life. Get education, work hard and honestly love your family. In 2010 when there was a shooting in the brewery, people attributed that to bad economy and employee outrage. Today  a lot of us are trying to understand the motive behind this killing of little kids. Someone pointed out that the suspect who killed his mother wanted to kill what his mother loved most. His mother loved teaching so he killed little kids. Will people think twice before they enroll their kids in school? Is the suspect going to get his wish? I know that he is not alive but I certainly hope that he did not kill our spirits to educate our kids.

You expressed feelings of this tragedy very well. All we can do is hold tight the ones we love and pray for their safety and for the healing of all those closely related to this event. We are unable to ever understand why but we are able to feel some peace in knowing the victims were watched over by a loving God.

Dear Munir,

This goes beyond any comprehension and these atrocities must create debate that somehow brings such outrage to an end.

The spirit of wanting to educate our children will never die. The tragedy is that those children and adults at the elementary school are not here to see that.

Wishing hope through this awful tragedy.

It's been too difficult to watch the news. I can't find a point of reference to even know where to begin to understand this.

I cried the moment I saw the parents in the news. Too sad. You reflected so well Munir on life in the area.

Dearest Munir,
Guess there is nothing wrong with the average American family but we have morally slipped off... My husband and I have worked and lived all over the world and that makes you look at your country different. How are we perceived by other nations? I can tell you once shocking fact: the negative impact of our Hollywood crap. People abroad even BELIEVE that we Americans live like the movies they export. That is wrong with this nation. Only aggression and mowing down of people is being shown to our young kids, to teenagers and we even export that. Shame on all of us for even supporting that. Hollywood is not a great role model and as a parent it will be hard to counter-balance that. With Internet, the impact of the low moral attitude is big. We better try to turn that back to common sense, to discipline and respect. Respect for children, for elderly and for animals...
Let's pray that we can get back to that level again!
Hugs to you and may God bless those innocent victims.

A mentally ill person didn't get the aid that he needed, finally snapped and other people paid the price. :(

The tragedy at Newtown is terrible. I can't fathom what would make a person do this. Last I heard the young man didn't have any ties with the school...which makes it even harder to understand.

All we can do is pray for all the lives that this tragedy has touched.

Seeing the president openly cry on television was very moving. I think we need to have a discussion about guns in this country. The NRA and gun owners are out of control.
